The score for WAVES is rooted from a melody originally conceived in the ICU at Cottage Hospital, Santa Barbara, CA. Cody would play his shakuhachi (Japanese Bamboo Flute) for his father and calm him during his last days. The melody eventually made it’s way into a full fledged solo piece for shakuhachi. In WAVES, Westheimer decided to layer many shakuhachi and also add his father’s favorite instrument: the cello. Victor Lawrence, an accomplished studio musician and close friend of Cody, graciously performed the solo cello part. The score was recorded at Westheimer’s own NEW WEST STUDIOS in Los Angeles.
